At a container port, containers are transferred between different modes of transportation, and they need to be moved from one vehicle to another. Cranes are typically used to load and unload containers.

Various cranes are used for cargo handling, including ship-to-shore cranes, rail-mounted cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes, and ship unloaders. Since a port operates 24/7, it is critical for cranes to be available for use simultaneously.

To maintain crane availability and minimize downtime, access to cranes must be quick and safe under all conditions. Standard cranes only come with ladders. Climbing all the ladders can take a long time, and accessing the crane during bad weather may not be safe.

Maintaining the crane can consume a lot of time and effort, especially since materials also need to be transported to the top of the crane.
